AU where Waterbending masters get tattoos as well.
Once they complete the first stage of their training they get a new moon tattoo. The tattoo gets filled more for each stage they complete. Masters have a full moon tattoo to indicate their complete mastery.
The tattoo is white which contrasts well with their darker skin.
I raise you “AU where ALL Bending masters get tattoos.” Firebender Masters get tattoos of Dragons across their back or chest. Earthbender Masters get geometric designs on their arms and/or legs.
Avatars are easily recognized by having all four sets of Tattoos, and some even go as far as to have the various tattoos merge, such as a full moon encircled by a flying dragon.
That works great because all of the Avatars will have glowing tattoos in the Avatar State and not just Air Nomad Avatars.
I love this idea and will reblog in hope that maybe some awesome artist out there will draw this 💖
Because of this it is also common to have tattoos when reaching other masteries such as sword masteries (a blade down their chest or along their forearm?) or kyoshi warrior status (an open fan across the shoulder blades?)

Aight! This took longer than expected and I havent finished all of it yet, but here’s the water tribe one. I loosely referenced on SEA traditional tattoos, specifically the Philippines.
I incorporated the moon tattoo from @charlesoberonn’s idea and figured it’d be neat to make it fill up like the phases of the moon. The designs on the moon also depends on what type of waterbending technique the person mastered at that time. Also if the person masters more techniques, an additional moon in placed on their shoulder, then on their thighs, then chest, then lastly on their forehead.
There’s also the ocean spirits with Tui, facing towards the hand, and La, facing towards the shoulder.
Everything else is just a combination of patterns of waves and fish scales. Just go wild, I guess.
These types of tattoos are mostly for the northern and southern water tribes though. The foggy swamps tribe is a different one, considering how their style diverts from the others, their’s would have more straight lines since it reflects their stiff waterbending. Also add more plant-like patterns. Their tattoos would probably be more brown or black instead of white… I think.
Anyone is free to add some stuff, or change some bits.
What if Kyoshi get tatoos in a simmilar manner, they add a new fan blade every time they advance to another rank, so the most experienced Kyoshis get a full back of glowy tatoos if they become an avatar
